On The Job Training of the PCR’s Students

In mid of August, 2007, my department accepted two students from the Politeknik Caltex Riau (PCR) under On The Job Training Program to learn about the instrumentation system commonly found in upstream oil industry for one month. And I was appointed as their supervisor during the program. At the end of the program, these students had to make a report and presentation.

After gave them a brief introduction about our company, I explained a little bit more detail about the crude oil processing principles and its facilities started from the oil well to the gathering station. The process knowledge is very important if you want to be a good instrument engineer.

Due to time constraint, I directed them to learn specifically about the application, operating principle, and calibration of the pressure switch used to protect the pump and the level transmitter used in the level control system. For those, they had to learn about pump operation principles, fluid mechanics (pressure), electricity, analog and digital signals, programmable logic controller, and calibration principles. That was a lot, right?

I also allowed them to have hands-on experience to calibrate the pressure switch and the level transmitter using deadweight tester, pneumatic hand pump and HART field communicator.

The program was ended after submitted their report and conducted the presentation. So.. good luck, guys !!!

  1. Dear sir,
I read what you have written in your weblog.
As I understood you and your company are engaged in industrial works.
I am a mechanical engineering graduate, and now I am a MSc student in IUST.
As my field of study was heat and fluids, I am interested in your affairs, and I appreciate If I get familiar with your company work. At last I should add that I’ve found your weblog admirable.
    Sincerely yours,

  2. Setelah sekitar berapa lama mencari2 di web akhirnya saya menemukan web yang berhubungan dengan tekanan, saya bergerak di bidang tekanan, mungkin bisa berbagi pengalaman di bidang ini

    ditunggu responnya

After long searching on the internet, finally I found a web which is related to the pressure. My work is also on the pressure affair. Maybe we can share our experience.

    Awaiting for your respons

  3. Hi Gigin,

    I love, too.

We measure pressure of the flowing liquid to protect the pump operated to avoid overpressure on the discharge section and cavitation on the suction one which can damage the pump. We use pressure switch to do such protection scheme.

We also install pressure transmitter connected to the PLC on some location to continuously monitor the pressure.

For such important task, we do regular calibration of pressure switch and pressure transmitter as our preventive maintenance program.

Hope it will give you a clearer idea how we deal with the pressure.

    Rgds,
    Hendri
